Warming Up The Writing Muscles

Well, it’s about time I started doing this again. Even though the frequency is spotty, I do often think about things to write about on here, it’s just that it’s normally when I’m nowhere near a computer and by the time I get back to one something shiny has distracted me and it’s soon forgotten.

My reasoning for putting this up to begin with is that I’m off on a holiday shortly, the longest I’ve had in a long time. I’m headed to the US and Canada for about 7 weeks, seeing friends, making new ones, taking advantage of being an Australian in another country. You know what I mean. The good shit. And while I’m moseying on around Teh Americas I’ll be writing stuff, on here coincidentally.

The Australian slang will be going off the charts when I move through small-town America, it’s going to be ridiculous. Like Kieran’s face. I’m sure at points I will compose sentences that comprise entirely of slang and made up words just to see if they can decipher it. I may or may not get punched.

To prepare for the sights I’ve bought myself a new shooter, a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2. For those in the know, it’s a Micro 4/3″ digital camera with interchangeable lenses. Not as bulky as a DSLR but with just as many features. I’m just waiting for it to be delivered now, should be a good one from all reports. You’ll soon see the results in the gallery.

Let me give you a little run down of where I’m headed.

First stop will be a few days in New York. I’ll get acclimatised, drunk, lost and possibly unconscious. All on the way from the airport to the hotel. I’m staying not 10mins walk from the United Nations building, watch the news for an international incident. It should be fun. My sister and I are big fans of a TV show called Man v Food, so I’ve made a list of a couple of places to visit while I’m there. I’ve also got plans on visiting as many Crossfit gyms while I’m there too, Crossfit NYC is already expecting me. I’ll need to if I get through the food I plan on eating.

Next up is flying to Toronto and then driving further north to Collingwood. I’m staying with a couple of friends up there for just over a week to start the snowboarding part of the trip. We’ll essentially be boarding and working out while I’m there so I’ll probably be quite sore if I don’t manage to hurt myself. A distinct possibility. Still not sure what’s in the area but I’m sure I can amuse myself.

After that it’s further west into Canadia, to Calgary where I’m staying with some family. I’ll be about 40mins from Banff so guess what? Snowboarding. So sore.

Once I’m finished there it’s south into North America, I’m flying to Boise, Idaho but not before I briefly try to avoid Joe Smith Jr and his peoples as I transit in Utah.

Boise States Blue Football Field

From there I’m driving, heading east first into Ketchum, Idaho to stay with another friend. But, not before I stop off at Boise State University to check out the blue field. It looks awful on TV, maybe it’s not as ridiculous looking in person.

The week in Ketchum should be interesting, it’s going to take about 2hrs to get there, through a couple of small towns and then up into the mountains. Again, it’s to stay with another friend of mine. Maybe not so much snowboarding this time, plenty of working out though and more than likely drinking. There’s quite a bit to see around the place so I’ll be happily snapping shots wherever I go. It looks like quite a beautiful area.

After that it’s on to Seattle, the land of grunge and an awful football team. I wouldn’t mind heading south to Portland though, Voodoo Doughnut is there.

The drive through to Seattle should be a good one. It’s about 800km so getting there in a day won’t take much if I really felt like it. But, I reckon I’ll drag it out over two days. Just to take in the scenery. From the looks of it, lots of potential for good photographs through there.

I plan on heading just outside of Seattle while I’m there, to see the Perth Blitz’s sister club, the South Sound Shockers. They’re in the midst of pre-season training at the moment so I’m going to see if I can join in for a bit. Might learn something to take back for our 2011 season. Who knows.

I would like to head up to Vancouver while I’m there, it takes about 2hrs to drive or 4hrs by train, schedule depending. Aside from that, I’m only there for a couple of days so I’ll have to plan that one out.

San Francisco is next, Nicole might be there too by that point. If that’s the case, we’re going out drinking. Lots of drinking. Seeing Alcatraz is

Alcatraz - Doesn't look that bad

fairly high on the list, naturally. Just wandering around the city should be great too. Looks like a beautiful place.

After SF, there’s no definite plans on the cards. I’ll have about 10 days to get to Los Angeles before I fly back to Sydney. Currently I’m checking out flying to Houston to stay a couple of days with some friends who’ve just moved there from Perth. Going to Texas is on the list, it is football country after all. Plus, it’s BBQ country too.

I had planned on going to Vegas, but since I’ll be by myself I don’t think it’ll have as much glamour. I’m of the opinion it’s a place you need to see with friends so you can get drunk, kill a hooker and leave the country. It’s the only way.

I do want to spend a couple of days in LA, but since it’s not that expensive to fly there anymore, it’s something I can go back to again reasonably easily. I know now, before I even get there, that I’ll head back to the US.

I’ve got a whole lot of little things I’d like to do while I’m there, which hopefully I’ll get to do. Well, most of them anyway, got to leave something for the next trip. And the one after that.

More writing soon. Kieran’s a cunt.

I was just saying I want to go to Vegas one day… but not for the hookers. Your trip sounds fun – will have to get you to bring us back a CF shirt :)
