Yes, I was drinking gasoline…mother!
I realise that it’s been a while since I have posted, but at least I am more reliable than certain others. I don’t want to name names…you all know who they are. So…do you like stuff? No? Me either. In fact, I hate stuff.
Many of you are well aware of my opinion of the English Royal Anthem. In particular, I hate the line “long to reign over us”. That has got to be the worst line in a song ever. Much worse than “accidentally Kelly Street where friends and stangers sometimes meet”. Huh? What the bloody hell is that supposed to mean? Anyhoo, God Save The Queen pisses me off more. It makes me feel as if those singing it are unable to, or simply will not, make decisions for themselves. They need a symbol of power to make them feel safe and loved. That’s just bullshit.
You may think that Hail To The Chief, the President of the USA’s official anthem would similarly piss me off, but it doesn’t. The President is an elected position and the lyrics of the songs (although they are rarely sung) reflect that:
Hail to the Chief we have chosen for the nation,
Hail to the Chief! We salute him, one and all.
Hail to the Chief, as we pledge cooperation
In proud fulfillment of a great, noble call.
Yours is the aim to make this grand country grander,
This you will do, that’s our strong, firm belief.
Hail to the one we selected as commander,
Hail to the President! Hail to the Chief!
Although I am not a fan of the American patriotic bullshit generally, I do enjoy the faith and respect they show in their highest elected official. There is no point having such a position of power, then not standing by it and supporting the office. By all means, pick on the actual person (particularly if you didn’t vote for him) but don’t pick on the office.
We don’t vote for a Queen (or a King for that matter) and yet we are expected to show them love and respect? Kings and Queens get to where they are because they or their ancestors have beeen ruthless in acquiring that power. I don’t think that is something to be singing about. When Australian’s finally get off their arse and vote for us to become a Republic, I hope that the President, or whatever the office will be, will receive the same amount of respect that the American President does.
Love and sloppy kisses,
